Is there such a thing?  What does your company do for IT related policies?

• Do you have a blanket IT Policy that covers all aspects of your organization?
• Do you filter Internet access?  If so, do you restrict access to the Internet via time and to what extent (quotas)?  What software/service do you use to do this?
• Do you monitor email contnet – either for proprietary information or for inapproriate information?
• Do you lock down your workstations – software installs, screensaver, wallpapers, etc.?
• What else does your firm have in terms of IT Policies and how do you enforce them?

Answer these questions and provide any feedback on IT policy related issues to help facilitate the Post-Conference Working Discussion Group session on this subject.  It would be great to get a feel for what others are doing out there…please contribute.

well i just noticed that kevin and i are going to be presenting concurrently. so come to mine.

in all seriousness, i suppose one of the goals of the blog is to get some conversation going so maybe it would help if we made the differences between our talks more clear for everyone. mine will only touch on linux and will not be a very technical talk. i'm going to focus on how firms can strategically use various open source packages to extend the resources of their development groups. i'll be presenting a survey of AEC firms and their adoption of open source technologies along with a case study on SMWM. I'll finish up with a look at how some other industries have pooled resources to develop applications and start a discussion on how the AEC industry might apply a similar approach.

I’m hoping everyone will attend my session on the 16th at 3:45pm. I’ll be describing the (often bumpy) road that my company, Nesbitt Engineering, Inc., took when deploying Linux in the past several years.

I’m hoping to provide enough information and NEI history that other companies with ideas or plans to deploy Linux will benefit.

Just to let you everyone know, no, we’re not using Linux on the desktop. I believe that Linux isn’t ready for the desktop yet. But, that hasn’t prevented us from using Linux in the server rooms and Network Operations Center.

Come watch the show, ask some questions and learn a bit about NEI, Open Source and Linux.
